Open for suggestions again!
My chickens have been home for two weeks now but haven't laid any eggs!! I'm looking for possible suggestions on how to kick things into gear (before they end up in the freezer! Rent isn't free around here ladies!!)
Here's what I can tell you that 's been done, being done and will be done:
Sunrise today was 6:01am, sunset is going to be at 8:20pm.
Last week was a very cold one (below zero every night and it snowed. Don't worry, the coop is very well insulated!)
I still need to make an adjustment to the roost but they HAVE been using it (both rungs!)
I am building some nesting boxes tonight, more enclosed than the small dog crate that's in there right now (my neighbor said that would be all they'd need but I think they just like to hide in there)
I have noticed that they have gotten a bit bigger since arriving, so I'm wondering if I didn't just get a group of slightly-too-young chickens?
So what are your thoughts??

The search for property continues...
Over the past month I've gone out with real estate agents and solo to look at a number of different properties. From the initial place with the wonky foundation, to a trailer on a swamp. I even went as far as to look at an old sawmill property (complete with LOADS of garbage, scrap, cement pads and what looks like an environmental disaster) in search of my property.
I haven't given up hope, but recent media reports that the cost of farm land in my area is a bit of a concern. It's not so much that people in the area want to farm (I can't tell you how much it makes my blood boil to see the amount of fields and farmland in the area turn slowly back to scrubby forest!!), but that people don't quite want to live in town but want the conveniences of being near town. To avoid the high taxes of our area communities, they go hide in the farm areas.... only to let the properties go unused!
It's really frustrating to watch this happen, especially with my limited budget and the pressure this is putting on the market. I'm still not too worried, I'll find something eventually... but I'm starting to get annoyed...

Chickens are more crafty than you think!
My little attempted escape artist... He's getting a chicken wire cover tonight!
